Glenorchy is located on the South Island of New Zealand at the head of Lake Wakatipu, 45 kilometres due north of Queenstown. Glenorchy is surrounded by mountains in every direction: The Humbolt range to the west, and the Richardson range to the east, the stunning view up the Dart River to the north, adjacent to solitary Mt. Alfred. Mt. Aspiring National Park and Fiordland National Park are just up the road.
The Glenorchy/Paradise area has long been a favourite of film crews. Portions of The Lord of the Rings, X-Men Origins:Wolverine and The Chronicles of Narnia:Prince Caspian were all filmed in the area.
If you are planning on hiking the Routeburn Track, one of New Zealand's Great Walks, Glenorchy makes an ideal base. The Glenorchy Lake House is located just 26km from the start of the Routeburn track and Routeburn track transport is readily available. Most trampers walk the Routeburn Track as a circuit - connecting with the Greenstone Track or Caples Track. Track transport from Glenorchy to the Greenstone/Caples carpark takes just 15 minutes by boat across Lake Wakatipu.
If day walks are more your speed - there are 19 different day walks in the Glenorchy area. You can get further into the back country with a 4WD tour or go 37 kilometres up the Dart River by jet boat into Mt. Aspiring National Park.
