Sustainability
We work hard to reduce our impact on the planet while operating in a remote place. We are doing our best to maintain this gorgeous location in a way that has a minimal impact on the environment. While we’re not perfect we are always striving to do better.
The house and Trading Post (next to the house) have solar power, including the Tesla charging point
There is a Tesla charging points at The Trading Post for electric vehicles
We use electric vehicles where possible to reduce our emissions
Heatpumps have been installed in the house and we have removed all gas, which reduces freight and increases our resilience
Cleaning products are environmentally friendly and chemical-free
Toiletries are all from NZ based EcoStore who create natural skin and body care products
Laundry is line-dried, unless the weather prevents us from doing so
To lesson our impact we will only change linen and towels every 3 days, unless otherwise requested
All old linen and towels are repurposed as rags if not fit for purpose
We have no single use cups and instead offer coffee cup rental with AgainAgain cups which can be returned to cafes in Queenstown, or elsewhere in NZ
We are happy to refill water bottles free of charge
Paper napkins, kitchen towel and paper towels are all composted at Kinloch, as are coffee grounds, which then goes into the garden to keep the soil rich
Coffee and tea for the house is organic and comes in recyclable/compostable packaging
Coffee for The Trading Post is sustainably sourced and provided in reusable buckets from Patagonia in Queenstown
Food waste from the house and The Trading Post goes to the chickens at Kinloch, or to the compost
All electric gardening equipment is charged from the solar power including our robot lawn mower, and reduces our need for fuel
We try to repair and maintain instead of buying new as much as possible
