Scheelite mining history, open tussock country and grand views await

Time: 2-3hrs one way to Bonnie Jean hut, 3-4hrs one way to Heather Jock hut

From the information shelter, a climb leads up the old Mt Judah Road, which sidles around the northern side of Mt Judah. About 30mins up the track you’ll find a stunning picnic spot with views over Glenorchy and Kinloch, plus the Glenorchy Scheelite Battery where you can learn about the mining history. You’ll find the State Mine about another 30mins further up the path, which is worth a side trip. Your next marker is the junction with the Mt McIntosh Loop, 1.5hrs from the carpark. From the junction continue up to the end of the Judah Road, Bonnie Jean Hut (day use only) is a half hour climb up a marked track.

Below Bonnie Jean Hut, a marked track follows an old mining road, that zig zags steeply to Heather Jock Hut (3 bunks), about 1-1.5hrs one way.

Mountain biking is permitted – intermediate track, gentle to steep climb – please follow the mountain bikers code: respect others, respect the rules, respect the track.

Horse riding is also possible on this track.

WARNING
The Whakaari tracks are alpine and exposed: changeable  weather, extreme temperatures, strong winds, snow and ice are possible at any time of year.
Streams may flood at any time of year due to rain or snow melt and should not be crossed in flood.
Dangerous mine tunnels are present and may be hidden by vegetation. Do not enter tunnels.
